Were There Giants on the Earth?

We read in Genesis “There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown” (Genesis 6:4)

The word “giants” is translated from the Hebrew word nephilim, from naphal, “he fell.” (Clarke’s Commentary). This word does not necessarily mean a person of great stature or size. In the Septuagint, a Greek translation of the Old Testament made in the pre-Christian era, the Greek word γιγαντες (gigantes) was used to translate nephilim. The word γιγαντες literally means “earth-born” (Clarke’s Commentary), and also does not necessarily indicate a person of great stature or size. However, some scholars have pointed out that Aramaic, which is closely related to Hebrew, has a word that in its plural form would be nephilin, equivalent to Hebrew nephilim, and meaning “giants” (cf “Battle over the Nephilim,” Tim Chaffey, answersingenesis.org, January 1, 2012).

God as Creator

We live in a world teeming with a vast assortment of living creatures. There exist the one celled microbes, such as bacteria and protozoa, invisibly small microscopic creatures that nevertheless under powerful magnification show complex and intricate design. On the other end of the scale are huge blue whales which may be 100 ft. long and weigh as much as 115 tons. The earth is home to birds that soar miles above sea level and also to creatures that live in the deepest parts of the ocean. There are plants which produce flowers of exquisite beauty and fragrance, and others that look and smell like rotten meat. From space earth looks like a shimmering blue and white jewel. The earth, unique among planets, is perfectly suited for life. Its uniqueness has been further highlighted by the Mariner, Viking and Voyager spacecraft probes which have shown the other known planets to be completely hostile and forbidding to life.

Why is the earth a uniquely living planet? Why is there such a teeming abundance and variety of life on earth? Is it an accident? Or is it planned and is there a purpose behind it? If there is a purpose, what is it? These are some of the questions I want to explore with you today.

Can You Believe What the Bible Says About Jesus (Part 2)?

In this message Rod Reynolds examines some prophecies from the Old Testament that were fulfilled in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. These prophecies give powerful testimony to the truth of Scripture, and the identity of Jesus Christ.

Each individual must decide what he or she will believe about the testimony of Scripture concerning Jesus Christ. The Bible offers us means of examining and testing the evidence for its claims. Whether one ultimately believes the gospel message, however, is not a casual decision to be taken lightly. It is, in the final analysis a matter of life and death, because no one can give you eternal life but God, who is the source of life and the author of salvation through eternal life in God’s kingdom.

Whether you claim to be a believer in Christ or not, it would behoove you to carefully examine the evidence concerning the Bible’s claims about Jesus.

Can You Believe What the Bible Says About Jesus (Part 1)?

The New Testament makes some very strong claims about Jesus. That he was born of a virgin. That he worked many miracles. That he died by crucifixion, and was resurrected three days later. That he has the authority to forgive sins, and thus remove their penalty. That he was God in the flesh.

None of us has seen Jesus, but does that mean God wants us to have blind faith, faith without evidence? We’re told that Jesus offered convincing evidence to those who became apostles, commissioned to preach the gospel to the world. He did not expect them to believe he was who he said he was without evidence to back up his claims.

If we are to believe not by blind faith, but in accordance to supporting evidence available to us, what is the evidence? In this message, we discuss evidence available that the New Testament testimony concerning Jesus is a reliable foundation for faith in him as the Messiah promised in the prophesies of the Bible. This message, is part one of a two part series.
